More about Alu Bazar Puran Dhaka আলুবাজার, ঢাকা

The capital city of Bangladesh which is known as Dhaka today did not have that much importance during the pre-Mughal era but the city became quite important during the Mughal period. In 1610 AD, Islam Khan Chisti Subah, after his transfer from the former Bengal capital of Rajmahal to Dhaka, named Dhaka as Jahangirnagar according to the name of the Mughal emperor at that time. But people kept on calling it Dhaka though officially it was named Jahangirnagar. Due to its location right beside some main river routes, Dhaka was an important center for business even at that time. A very famous fabric known as Muslin was produced here. After Bangladesh gained independence, Dhaka as the capital city became an important center for all kinds of activities.

The history of Dhaka begins with the existence of urbanised settlements in the area that is now Dhaka dating from the 7th century CE. The city area was ruled by the Buddhist kingdom of Kamarupa before passing to the control of the Sena dynasty in the 9th century CE.[1] The Dhaka area of that time was identified as Bangala. The town consisted of a few market centers like Lakshmi Bazar, Shankhari Bazar, Tanti Bazar, and a few localities of other craftsmen and businessmen like Patuatuli and Kumartuli, Bania Nagar and Goal Nagar. After the Sena dynasty, Dhaka was successively ruled by the Turkish and Afghan governors descending from the Delhi Sultanate before the arrival of the Mughals in 1608. The Afghan Fort in Dhaka was located at the present Central Jail.[1]
