Brazilian jiu jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art, combat sport, and a self-defense system that focuses on grappling and ground fighting. BJJ was formed early on in the 20th century using elements from Judo and taught to various students in Brazil by Master Mitsuyo Maeda of Japan. It evolved into its own martial art through adaptation, practice, and experimentation by Grandmaster Helio Gracie, who then passed on this knowledge to his extended family.
BJJ promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can defend against a bigger, stronger opponent using technique, leverage, and groundwork combined with various joint locks and chokeholds to submit the opponent. It is used for sport grappling tournaments including gi and no-gi, mixed martial arts, and self-defense on the streets, making it the ultimate self-defense martial art for millions worldwide.
