Karimganj district is one of the 33 districts of Assam state, India. The administrative headquarters of this district, Karimganj city is the biggest city in this district. It is located in southern Assam and borders Tripura and Sylhet district of Bangladesh. It was a part of Sylhet district of Assam before partition of India and remained in India while the rest of Sylhet district joined Pakistan and karimgonj was occupied by India although it voted to join Pakistan in referendum. It became a district in 1983.
