HAZRAT SYED SHAH NASIR UDDIN SIPAHOSALAR(R.A):
Delhi in 1334 AD. Sultan MUHAMMAD BIN TUGHLAQ

Shah Syed Nasiruddin (13th century) saint and Islamic preacher, was born in Baghdad. After Halaku Khan destroyed Baghdad, he left the city in search of livelihood and ultimately reached Delhi. Later, he participated in the SYLHET expedition with commander Sikandar Khan and Hazrat SHAH JALAL (R).
Syed Nasiruddin was a follower of the SUHRAWARDIA TARIQA (order). There are many legends about his supernatural powers. At Shah Jalal's direction, accompanied by twelve saints, he attacked and defeated king Achak Narayan of Taraf and became administrator there. His shrine is at Murabandh Taraf in HABIGANJ.

Knowing that Shah Jalal was advancing towards Sylhet, Raja Gaur Govinda, the king, removed all ferry boats from the river Surma, thereby cutting off any means of crossing into Sylhet. Legend has it that Shah Jalal crossed the river Surma by sitting on a Jainamaz (prayer rug). Upon reaching the opposite bank, he ordered the Azan (call to prayer) to be sounded, at which the magnificent palace of Gaur Govinda shattered. With Shah Jalal's help, the Hindus were completely defeated and crushed by the Muslim Army.
According to legend, Shah Jalal found a match for the earth his uncle once gave him, and following to his uncle's wishes, he settled down in Sylhet, near Choukidhiki. It is from here that he preached Islam and became a celebrated Muslim figure in Bengal. He and his disciples traveled and settled as far as Mymensingh and Dhaka to spread the teachings of Islam, such as Shah Paran in Sylhet, Shah Malek Yemeni in Dhaka, Syed Ahmad Kolla Shahid in Comilla, Syed Nasiruddin in the region of Pargana Taraf, Haji Daria and Shaikh Ali Yemeni. An expedition to Chittagong was led by Khwaja Burhanuddin Qattan and Shah Badruddin. An expedition to Sunamganj was led by Shah Kamal Qattani, whose shrine is located in Shaharpara, Sunamganj.
Suhrawardia Tariqa a Sufi tariqa (way) initiated by Sheikh Najibuddin Abdul Quadir (died in 1169) during the 12th century. This religious cult is named Suhrawardia Tariqa because Sheikh Najibuddin Abdul Quadir was born in Suhrwardinagar in Jibal province in Iran. After the death of Abdul Quadir, the tariqa was substantially developed by his nephew, Sahabuddin Abu Hafs Omar-ibn-Abdullah, who is often said to be the real founder of the sect. The rules of Iran had a special respect for him. The Persian poet, Sheikh Sadi, also was his disciple.
Abdullah wrote a book Awarif-ul-ma'arif on Tasaouf. In the book he discussed about KHANQAH and the way of life in them, including rules and regulations. The book gained popularity in the subcontinent. Sheikh Bahauddin Zakria Multani (1169-1266) brought the Suhrawardia tariqa to India and Sultan Shamsuddin Iltutmish honoured him with the title 'Shayakh-ul-Islam'. Sheikh Jalaluddin Tabrizi, a disciple of Sheikh Shahabuddin Suhrawardi and a friend of Sheikh Bahauddin Zakria, came to Bengal during the reign of LAKSMANASENA to propagate the Suhrawardia tariqa. His disciples are known as Jalalia.
Hazrat SHAH JALAL (R), the famous Muslim saint of SYLHET was a follower of the Suhrawardia tariqa. Sama, a special music form is an important part of the devotional and mystical practices of this tariqa. [Muhammad Ruhul Amin]
Ibn Batuta (1304-1377) Moroccan traveller who visited Bengal during the reign of Sultan FAKHRUDDIN MUBARAK SHAH (1338-1349) and left an account of his visit in his Rehla. He started on his travels in 1325 AD and during the next eight years explored northern Africa, Arabia, Persia, the Levant (the eastern part of the Mediterranean) and Constantinople before he reached Delhi in 1334 AD. Sultan MUHAMMAD BIN TUGHLAQ appointed him QAZI of Delhi. He held this office for about eight years. Then the sultan sent him as an ambassador to China (1342). Shipwrecked on the way, he came to Bengal through the Maldives (1342), Sri Lanka (1345) and southern India. The purpose of his visit to Bengal was to meet Hazrat SHAH JALAL (R) of Sylhet.
The first town of Bengal that Ibn Batuta entered in 1346 was Sudkawan (Chittagong). Then he went to Kamaru (KAMARUPA) to meet Shah Jalal (R). After a three-day halt in the hospice of the saint he went towards the town of Habank (Habiganj) on the bank of the Nahr ul-azraq (the blue river, ie, Surma). He sailed on this river for fifteen days and reached the town of Sunarkawan (SONARGAON) where he boarded a Chinese junk bound for Java. His travels in Bangladesh seems to cover a period of less than two months (July-August 1346).
