BETELCO was established in Dhaka, Bangladesh, in 1991 as a private limited company by its founder and current Managing Director, T A M Nurul Basher - an electrical engineer by training from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). The company had a very modest beginning with its first consignment of 25 transformers being supplied to Dhaka Electric Supply Authority (DESA).

Initially its activities were focused on both the telecommunications and power sector. Over time, this has gravitated towards the power sector. Today, BETELCO is one of the largest distribution transformer manufacturers in Bangladesh.
