Birla Institute of Technology, Kolkata

The Birla Institute of Technology was established in the year of 1958 at 56, Barrackpore Trunk Road. Kolkata-700050 as a Polytechnic sponsored by Govt. of West Bengal and Philanthropist – Industrialist Mr.B.M. Birla with a vision to be recognized as a world class learning institution for engineering and technology by providing the highest-quality academic programs that foster student development and connect knowledge, practice , and outstanding scholarly research. Over the last fifty years, the Institute has not just kept pace with the times; it has often taken a lead in introduction of programs in emerging areas.

Initially the Institute offered four years sandwich courses in Mechanical Engineering and Structural Fabrication Engineering. Two years Diploma courses for training of technician in Mechanical engineering and Electrical engineering and 5 years part time evening courses in Mechanical engineering and Electrical engineering branch.

In 1978 Govt. of West Bengal took over this polytechnic and since then its journey for academic excellence remained undeterred and now it is considered as one amongst the distinguished polytechnic of the state. Due to some practical intricacies (e.g., lack of sponsorship etc.) instead of above mentioned 4 years and 2 years courses, 3 years diploma courses (full time) in Electronic & Telecommunication and Mechanical Engineering were started in late 80’s. In 1995 part time evening course in Diploma in Electronic & Telecommunication Engineering was commenced instead of Electrical Engineering.
