More about Chittagong Cantonment High School

Chittagong Cantonment High School is situated in the outskirts of Chittagong town, adjacent to Chittagong Cantonment Board. It is directed by “Directorate of Military Lands & Cantonments” (DML&C), Ministry of Defence, Dhaka Cantonment and controlled by Chittagong Cantonment Board. It has beautiful surroundings with green hills and tall tamarisk trees. In 1955 a decision was taken to set up a school and employ two teachers by the Cantonment Board in this area with a view to imparting education to the children of the armed force serving at Chittagong Cantonment. With this end in view, General M. Ataul Gani Osmani the Commander-in-chief of the Liberation War of Bangladesh laid the foundation stone of this institution in 1955 and inaugurated the school on April 20, 1955 in a two roomed quarter adjacent to the then transit camp with 17 students. He was the Commander of the "East Bengal Regiment Centre" and Station Commander of Chittagong Cantonment from 1954 to 1956 and Mr. Nazimuddin was the executive officer of Chittagong Cantonment Board at that time.

The school used to conduct its curriculum in two mediums namely Bangla and Urdu. Initially it provided primary level education. By the passage of time its number of students increased significantly and received grants from the government within a short period. In 1960, the number of students grew up to 300.

The foundation of the present school was laid by Ayub Khan in 1962. The construction work of the school had commenced in the same year and finished in 1967. The decision of upgrading the school into a secondary one was taken in 1964. A prayer was put up to the higher authority for this purpose. Local elites and respectable persons extended their helping hands for the development of the school. Then 18 teachers were given appointment by the Chittagong Cantonment Board. Among the teachers, 9 were Bengali speaking and the rest were Urdu speaking persons. The academic excellence and dedication of the faculty members attracted students from distant regions. In 1967, the school got recognition from Education Board for opening class X. In the following year, 8 students appeared at the SSC exam for the first time. A student obtained 17th position in the merit list with two letters. As a result, the reputation of the school spread far and wide. In consequence, a massive infrastructural development was done. In fact, the school flourished from a grass root level to the present one by dint of all out effort from all corners.

During the Liberation War, two teachers of this school sacrificed their lives. Moreover, the school properties were destroyed heavily. However, after liberation war the school started its activities again with new zeal. In 1973, a student named Solimullah Khan secured first position in the SSC exam from Humanities group under the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Comilla. The legacy of success continued for a long time. In 1996 and 1998 two students of the school stood 8th position from science group and 14th postion from business studies group respectively. In 2010 and 2012 a 100% success in the SSC enhanced the image of the school. Apart from academic excellence, the school has a acclaiming heritage of diverse co-curricular and cultural activities.

Appropriate guidance from the honorable General Officer Commanding of 24 Infantry Division and Area Commander of Chittagong Area , tireless effort of the Station Commander, all out cooperation of the Cantonment Executive Officer, skilled administration of the present Headmaster and relentless endeavor of 32 well trained and experienced teachers have created a learning ground for more than 1700 pupils. We hope the reputation and success of the school will be accelerated day by day and one day it will become one of the best schools in Bangladesh.
