In the Year 1921 the doors were opened formally of the University of Dhaka, which has been widely renowned as the Oxford of the East throughout the World. It inherited most of the state of the Ramna of Dhaka, the heart of the city. This University has got a reputation due to its academic standard at international level.

After some decades in the year 1965, under the auspices of Prof. Shah Md. Fazlur Rahman, necessity of higher studies in Electronics & Telecommunication has been realized and in the month of September of the same year courses for M.Sc degree with 25 students for a new Department named as Applied Physics has been emerged to offer the above mentioned courses. Prof. Shah Md. Fazlur Rahman was the founder Head of the Department. To meet the increasing demand of studies in different fields of Electronics, Computer & Communication in the newly independent Country and to expand the facilities for quicker advancement of Electronics and related education in general, emphasis was being given on the above-mentioned courses. In order to create facilities in the above fields, this Department was upgraded to the status giving a new name, Department of Applied Physics & Electronics in the year 1974. Later on in the year 1975 B.Sc. Honours degree was introduced.

The name of the Department has been changed to Applied Physics, Electronics and Communication Engineering on 8th October, 2005.

In this department, academic learning is supported by strong practical programs such as laboratory experiments, internships, projects undertaken jointly with industries. Students have the opportunity to engage in real world activities in telecommunication networks, Mobile system engineering, material research, hardware and software development etc. including sophisticated knowledge and professional competence. The course curriculum can be expressed in three categories. First category includes study and analysis of physical & chemical properties of matter, the use of materials in engineering & technology field by designing technology based of fundamental theory. Second includes the invention, improvement and the realization of new fabrication technology based of the properties of materials such as electronic and chemical engineering, information technology etc. Third includes communication engineering, computer architecture, software development, AI & Robotics.
To keep pace with advancement of the world, with up-gradation of syllabus the dept has been changed to Dept. of Electrical & Electronic Engineering.
