More about IOM Bangladesh

IOM World Wide:

IOM as an intergovernmental organization is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all, supported by 156 Member States, a further 16 observer states, and 400 field offices in over 150 countries. IOM believes in achieving this goal through a close connection with its Member States, through which cooperation, understanding and communication with high-level government officials can be achieved. IOM also has a Cooperation Agreement with the United Nations (UN), formalizing a longstanding and close working partnership with the UN and its organizations.

IOM works in four broad areas of migration management in support of the principle that humane and orderly migration benefits migrants and society:
• Migration and Development
• Facilitating Migration
• Regulating Migration
• Forced Migration

In addition, activities that cut across these areas include the promotion of international migration law, protection of migrants' rights, migration health, policy debate and guidance, and the gender dimension of migration.

IOM in Bangladesh

Bangladesh became a member state of IOM in 1990, following IOM’s assistance to Bangladeshis during the Persian Gulf crisis, where IOM repatriated around 63,000 migrant workers to Bangladesh. Subsequently, in 1998 the Regional Office for South Asia was established in Dhaka.

Restructured as the county office for Bangladesh in 2011, IOM Dhaka is actively engaged in working with the Government of Bangladesh (GoB) in ensuring the protection and welfare of migrants rights through working together with key ministries and agencies of the GoB such as the Ministry of Expatriates Welfare and Overseas Employment (MoEWOE) Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA), Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA), Ministry of Women and Children Affairs (MoWCA), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MohFW), Bureau of Manpower Employment and Training (BMET) and several other key ministries and state agencies of the Government. IOM also cooperates closely with an array of other stakeholders in the private sector including corporate houses, National and International non-government organizations ( NGO's, INGO's) and UN Agencies.

IOM Bangladesh has a dedicated team of migration experts, working towards better migration management and responding to situations based on the needs of the government. IOM’s flexible administrative and programme structure gives it an advantage to tailor its interventions based on the issues at hand.
