More about Maitreya Montessori House Of Children

Maitreya Montessori House of Children, has been started by Miss. Mende Lama in 2016. She is a trained and qualified Montessori Directress from Association Montessori Internationale, (AMI) the organization set up by Dr. Maria Montessori herself.

VISION
To create a school that adopts the Montessori method in the purest form to a standard that would qualify as excellent and therefore provide a real Montessori experience to the children in our community.

MISSION
The environment is designed according to international standards and every material used is AMI approved therefore ensuring that we fully adhere to 100% of the Montessori philosophy.
To cultivate in each child a love of learning by giving them an opportunity to enquire, discuss and argue. Also, to prepare the child for life, by giving them the confidence to tackle any challenge that they are faced with.

ENVIRONMENT
One of the most important elements of the Montessori philosophy is the ‘prepared environment’. Our Montessori environment is bright and spacious. Every child here is valued as a member of a fully functioning children’s community. We have provisions for a spacious washroom, which is child friendly too with child-sized basins and commodes. The environment is fully prepared to meet the needs of this young child, where he will have the freedom of movement as well as the freedom of choice (within limits), which eventually guides the child towards independence and therefore confidence.

CURRICULUM
In a Montessori, we have five areas of the curriculum. All children follow their natural path of development and children are given the freedom to choose their own work. The children thus work simultaneously in all the areas, giving utmost importance to their needs at the moment.

Exercises of Practical Life
Here we have items of everyday use that the child comes across in his day-to-day life. These include pouring, dusting, polishing, sweeping etc. Here in the Children’s House we have taken great effort to keep materials that are physically as well as psychically proportionate so that the child can work with the material on his own, feel like a part of his society, strengthen his co-ordination and also lengthen his attention span. The child learns to pay attention to detail and follows a sequence of movements; therefore Exercises of Practical Life indirectly prepares his hand for writing and his mind indirectly for mathematics and logical thinking.

Sensorial
Dr. Montessori specially designed materials so the child can refine his senses. The child through these materials is exposed to the various physical properties of matter- size, shape, color, smell, sound, taste, weight, texture, 3 dimensional etc. These qualities of properties when made concrete leavea lasting impression upon the mind of this young child.

Language
This is an extremely important time for language development. Montessori’s approach to language is very systematic and so the child goes from identifying sounds inspoken words, then to writing (where they write their own thoughts) to reading (where they read somebody else’s thoughts).
We also impart ‘Hindi’ and ‘Nepali’ to the children and in the future look to imparting foreign languages too.

Mathematics
Learning Mathematics at this age is not repetitive rote learning, Mathematics is abstract and children understand this abstraction when there is sufficient preparation so Dr. Maria Montessori made materials in other areas so that when the child eventually comes to math, he understands the complex idea of counting within the system of numeration. In the House of Children, we provide him with concrete materials and then slowly move on to the abstract. We thus begin math with the Number Rods where the child will now count with understanding.

Culture
We introduce culture to the child very early on. The child is exposed to the world of animals, plants, science, geography, history, art and music. To understand areas of culture, there will be trips to the zoo, the mall, the departmental store, the shopping mall etc.
