More about YouthWalk Bangladesh

OUR PROGRAMS:

Education Program-

Road2School (R2S) is an education-centered project aimed at raising literacy rates and educational awareness within the highly impoverished slum communities of Dhaka, Bangladesh.

According to UNDP, a significant 95 percent has been achieved in terms of primary school enrollment. However, the DROP OUT RATES REMAIN HIGH and therefore PRIMARY SCHOOL COMPLETION RATES LOW. What’s even more alarming is that these rates are highest in the very heart of our bustling capital, our slums.

Education, is universally recognized as a child’s right, but has increasingly become an object of neglect in here. Without educated or aware parents to guide them, very few slum children go to the local school. This inevitably increases the possibility for child labor, substance abuse and other dark elements entering the lives of these children, eventually.

Our aim is to provide financial support and guidance to these kids, provide them with educational and recreational services, enroll them in school, and keep them there.

In addition to getting the kids admitted to a school, we have teachers who would consistently monitor the progress of each student, make appropriate interventions for further improvement and provide personal attention, and introduce them to the world of opportunities that education opens.

With the extended support of our enthusiastic, dedicated and diligent supporters and students, we eagerly vision a bright future lying ahead of these special kids.

AWARENESS PROGRAM-

Trash The Ash (TTA) is an awareness raising project that targets Bangladeshi school and college students to open their eyes to the often ignored dangers of narcotics and fight the culture of smoking and substance abuse in our country.

The Department of Narcotics Control says that Bangladesh has more than 4 million drug abusers, a shocking 80% of whom are YOUTH. Our own studies have confirmed such disturbing trends as well. In 2012, a survey we conducted found that a third of the people who tried smoking just once, eventually became chain-smokers, and 89% of chain smokers eventually did some form of hard drug. The age group we surveyed was just 6-21 years old.

It’s superfluous to say that smoking and drugs shackle and inevitably destroy lives. So, TTA aspires to equip potential smokers & drug-abusers with the tools and impetus to lead a drug-free and healthy life.

Taking one’s message straight to one’s beneficiaries is the best way to affect change. So we directly visit high-schools and spend entire days with the students. On campaign days, we organize different sessions of 70-80 minutes which consist of inspirational speeches, workshops by experts, dramas, essay competitions, counseling, signing on board, etc. We also distribute booklets and stickers with extensive information on smoking & drugs.

We believe that our enthusiasm and spirit will take our project to new heights from where we can realize our vision of a smoking and drugs free nation.
